The Refreshments – “Banditos”
You would think after six television series, one of them being animated, and 12 movies (movie # 13 is currently being written), that coming up with a top ten character list would be difficult. Not only that, having two similar top ten lists would be statistically improbable. Spoiler alert, just like half of this franchise’s movies and TV series, prepare to be disappointed.
Truth be told, neither Keith nor I would categorize ourselves as Trekkers or Trekkies. I give the original 1960’s TV series a lot of credit for sneaking in contemporary social commentary under the guise of a futuristic setting. (“No, the episode is totally not about race relations in the South… it’s about… um… these two aliens races that are completely not like us… riiiiiight.”) My problem with the franchise is that for the longest time, the concept of consistency and continuity were as alien as… umm… well an extraterrestrial alien. Not to mention the fact that Star Trek aliens tended to be not-so-alien from humans. (one of the Federation’s enemies happens to act very much like the Soviets, and another enemy acts like ancient Romans, and coincidentally happens to call themselves Romulans.) Yeah, as a sci-fi fan, I align myself with the Star Wars and Babylon 5 camps. I won’t speak for Keith, but his Top Ten lists clearly demonstrates his loyalty towards Star Wars.
But we can’t just ignore the pop culture juggernaut that is Star Trek. We are including all TV series and movies. We are not including the novels because, unlike Star Wars, not many have read them. (Although unlike SW, they could be canon for all I know). So without further adieu, here are our lists.
