The Top Ten scary movie monsters

When it comes to the horror genre, a scary movie goes only as far as its villain.

I am not a horror movie fan. My problems with the genre is that many try too hard to make gore for gore’s sake, all at the expense of everything else that makes movies good: likable characters, coherent plots, decent acting, and production values. The no-budget “B” films are sometimes more interesting than the big-budget slasher flicks. The fake CGI blood splattering and painfully obvious jump scares of the latter are boring; the former’s attempts at cheesy f/x have some sort of campy entertainment value.

Nevertheless, the most iconic Hollywood movie characters are horror villains. They live forever both figuratively and literally. These monsters have been loved to be hated for generations. And plus, most of them are seemingly immortal in the sense that no matter how many times they are killed, they just keep coming back to life.

On many of his picks, Keith did not list one individual scary monster. He lumped the entire class or race of monster altogether as one pick.

Many of these films have intention comedy mixed in, partially to relieve the tension, and partially because the writers and directors are winking to the audience. With that in mind, some of my choices and honorable mentions are also a bit tongue-in-cheek. Because, hey, it’s only a movie.

Without further adieu, may I present…
