The Top Ten Sports movies

Let me state the painfully obvious: the biggest handicap sports movies face is that real, live sports (not influenced by gamblers) is much more dramatic due to its unpredictability. We’ve all heard the clichés, “Any given Sunday,” “That’s why they play the game,” “the game’s not played on paper,” and “That’s baseball, Suzyn.” 

The second biggest problems sports movies have is continuity errors. Any movie depiction of a real live event is going to have problems with authenticity: equipment, stadium, weather, and play-by-play events. That is why the best sports movies are not solely focused on the sporting event(s) on the field, but on the characters off the field.

Obviously, we were pretty liberal on what constitutes a sport. Every other time, I would not consider poker or professional wrestling a sport. The rule of thumb for this list is: if it aired on an ESPN channel at one time, it is eligible for this list.

Besides, it’s not really sports, it’s only a movie.
